If the book is fiction, you have to finish it first. But if it is non-fiction you can query just the idea.To start you should find a literary agent. To do this you send a one page query letter to an agent and try to sell them on your idea or book. There are several websites out there that will help you find an agent and show you how to write a query letter, my favorite is QueryTracker.net at [external link] . It is free and has a list of literary agents and also tools to help you keep track of who you already queried and who you haven’t, plus more. They do a good job of keeping the crooks off their lists, but it is still a good idea to double check at [external link] …There are a lot of crooks out there. Never pay anyone to read or publish your book. A real agent will never ask for money except as a percentage of your royalties.Keep in mind that finding an agent and getting published is not an easy process. Some people have to query hundreds of agents before they find one who will accept them (sadly, some never get accepted), but be persistent and keep trying. You should also visit [external link] , one of the largest forums for writers. They can be very helpful.Good luck.

write it first. then send the manuscript to publishers. find contacts while you are writing so it won’t be some blind-sided cold-calling bullshi.t where no one answers you.

My advice would be to start writing your essays first. Once you have a collection put together and edited, you can get started thinking about the publishing aspect.I know this probably isn’t the answer you were looking for. Too many writers spend too much time finding out how to move forward without spending enough time writing the works that will move them forward. That is why there are so many aspiring authors and few published ones. The published ones write. The perpetually aspiring ones have nothing written because they’re spending all their time researching how to format them.Write write write write write. Once you have something written, it will be a lot easier to learn about the publishing options and find someone interested in taking your work. (A publisher can’t work with something that isn’t written, and you’d rather the be excited about working with you, instead of tell you, “Come back when it’s done!”)
