Can you underline in essays…?

to exaggerate a word? or do you italicize them? or do you have to leave them alone and hope the reader emphasizes that particular word?

    I’d say it depends on the formality of the essay, and the subject/course you are writing it for. For example, in an analytical English essay (eg. analysing a Shakespeare play), I wouldn’t use underlining or italicizing anywhere. If you are writing an expository/argumentative essay, they often have a little bit of leeway, so you might be able to, but even then, I’d just try to structure my sentence to mentally make the reader emphasize the word themselves.Hope that helps! :)
