    A child is a gift from God, a blessing from the heavens. Children are the course of enthusiasm and love….. Just write a paragraph describing them… how hard can that be?

    This is one of those ‘write a short essay’ problems that is very confusing. Don’t think of writing a ‘complete story’ but only about writing the DESCRIPTION of one thing … and then you are asked to TRY to use ‘at least one metaphor’ per description. DO NOT try to use MORE than one ‘metaphor’ … the one you could use for the ‘shabby sofa’ may be ‘like the womb of a fifth child, comfortable beyond belief, but not at all attractive’ … (okay, that is a ‘simile’ but it’s also a ‘metaphor’ for the ‘comfort’ of that ‘shabby’ sofa.) Think about each word and make each description tell EXACTLY what you want it to say, no more and no less. Good luck.

    Try to describe what you see. first make a list of the observable features. Then have a think about what you can tell about the item, try to be imaginative. For instance, the sofa, describe the wear and tear and imagine how the rips in the back of the sofa may have occured, for example, on close examination, a long rip like a scar from it’s previous existence can be seen, perhaps as a result of over zealous children bouncing despite repeated reminders from their parents. It has been stitched in a shade of thread just a few shades darker, in an attempt to prolong it’s life, perhaps in casualty for upholstery. Hope this helps, i think the purpose of the paragraph is to demonstrate your ability to read in to the things you see and then make a piece of text more alive than a catalougue description! Good luck
