Original ideas for a haunted house?

Hi everyone! I've got this English lang essay to write, and the theme is "a haunted house." The pinnacle thing is that it cannot be cliched (so no house on the hill with the lightning and the ghost etc...) It could be scary but not blatantly so. Could anyone give me some ideas to start me off, obviously I don't expect you to give me a whole story/description. Any ideas/thoughts are MUCH appreciated!Thanksx

A doll house, or a tree house seem like good alternatives. How about a caveman’s cave with pictographs coming to life on the wall? Plato’s cave of divine world shadows and someone trying to figure them out? [external link] …”Behold! human beings living in an underground cave, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the cave; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads. Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see, if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets. – Plato, Book Seven of the Republic, from Allegory of the Cave” This is how Plato described our knowledge of heaven.

You could make it something more modern, kind of like in Poltergeist. They were your average suburban family that happened to unleash the poltergeists. Maybe it could be about kids that get haunted after playing with an Ouija board? That’d be creepy without being cliche.
