Civil War History Help?

I have my final tomorrow and I get to write two essays! I have ideas for both of them but while I am trying to study, does anyone have any other information I could plug in to add length? Here they are! Older history text books used to say that the cause of the civil war was slavery, yet only a small minority of the population owned slaves. Is it enough to simply state that slavery was the cause of the civil war? If not, then what do you believe caused the civil war? Whichever way you chose to argue this question is fine, but be sure to provide adequately support your belief with specific examples. In the course of your essay, also explain the significance of slavery to the peoples of the South. The United States grew both territorially and economically in the nineteenth century. Describe the various efforts, both successful and unsuccessful, to expand the territorial boundaries of the United States. What motivated expansionists? How did the United States’ economy change? This essay may mention information used in the last exam, but the focus should be what’s been covered since the last exam.

Is it enough to simply state that slavery was the cause of the civil war? Yes.Expansionism was an ism. Then came isolationism. Another ism. Sounds like politicians are more suck it and see than visionaries.

The issues of states rights and tariffs were the beginning of the Civil War. Slavery did not become an issue until 1862, nearly a year and a half after the war started. Even Lincoln made statements such as, “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery……”. and “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.”These quotes show that Lincoln believed only in saving the Union and did not worry himself about the issue of slavery so much. The issue of slavery was brought about only after the North began losing the war, and popular opinion in the North was turning against keeping the war for the Union going. After the North claimed a victory at the Battle of Antietam or Sharpsburg in Sept. 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The only real FIRST time that slavery became an issue since the start of the War.Hope this sheds some light for you,Best of Luck,Mark
